I first came across the idea of engaged pedagogy while reading an excerpt from ‘Teaching to Transgress’ by bell hooks, a feminist scholar and personal inspiration. It calls for teachers to be lifelong learners and share their knowledge while also learning from their students and the world around them. In my teaching roles, I began applying this concept and noticed that it did not matter if I was teaching organic chemistry to college Freshmen or English to primary school children in Mexico–I always had something new to learn from my students, regardless of age, background or language.

I am originally from the Southeast Michigan area of the United States and am planning to attend medical school and become a physician. However, I chose to come and live in Spain to teach because for me, teaching is a huge part of what makes me happy. I have been teaching in some capacity for over 5 years now and will continue to make it part of my life and career in the future. Continuing to learn, grow and enjoy my time in Madrid is something I am very much looking forward to, and by sharing a bit about my experience, I hope to lend to the experiences of others so they can do the same.
